We all heard stories this weekend about the Hospice of the Valley (HOV) and how much support they gave our Uncle, our Dad, his Siblings and Mother, and our Cousins David and Monica. Today, I had a little time and was researching the HOV and while doing so came across this amazing book. I think we'll all enjoy reading it.
Book Club Info:
Get a copy and read it. (I got mine free from my local public library) In a month we'll discuss the book, then we'll choose another book to read.
This month's book:
The Ultimate Gift by Jim Stovall

Synopsis
The Ultimate Gift, written by Jim Stovall, is a story of Red Stevens, an accomplished man, who learned too late that giving material things is more like taking than giving.
Red owned everything a man could ask for and generously gave his family a piece of that everything. However, right before he died Red Stevens realized one thing. Red looked down along the long list of things he gave his family and suddenly came to the conclusion that he had given them nothing by giving them everything.
While most of his family were lost causes because of his mistake, one stood out with potential to learn. That one was in store for the year to end all years. That one was his nephew Jason. Every step of the way there is a lesson for Jason and the reader. Things such as values, hard work, the appreciation for money, and the love of giving are taught to Jason. Uncle Red hits a homerun when he teaches Jason the most important lesson of all.
For those of you who prefer books on tape, it's available in that format as well.
Finally, with those who are too... "busy" to read it's also been made into a major Hollywood movie which is available for rent or purchase in most areas.

So if I'm too pushy or missed any of the conversation about the book club (including someone already picking another book) I'm sorry.
Also, I guess we should have a standard date to discuss the book. Any suggestions?
I have placed a hold for the book and the DVD at my local library. I must have missed the discussion on doing a book club. I like the idea, and like the first book. I would ask that we would vote on books before hand to make sure that we all have access to them. I listen to most of the books I take in and this one has not been made into a book on tape yet so I will be reading it which is not a problem this time or sometimes, but a 800 page book in the future will take me a year to read if I cant listen to it on a tape.
Thanks again for getting this started.
IG
how are we going to "meet" to discuss this book?
Hey Mike,
You can buy the book-on-tape at their webpage and then donate it to your local library. It's only $10.
Here's the URL

I'm not sure who discussed the book club because I didn't hear anything about it either. Sounds interesting though. I will see if I can get a copy.
Probably the only way to discuss the book would be to use a chatroom like windows or yahoo messenger.
I was thinking of have a book club night at the Sibling Reunion. And it was mostly just because the book Shelby is reading and had been in moms book club was set were we are having the reunion.
I would be OK with having an online book club and this book sounds good. I don't read that much so I would not want to do one every month. So pick a date and I will find a way to read the book.
Hi, I missed all of this because I was on a plane ... tell me what to do and when to have it done and I am game!
i like the idea of a book club. Couple of thoughts -
1. can we extend the reading period for this book to mid January to account for this being an extra busy time of year for most of us (including those of us currently cooking pumpkin pies in the middle of the night).
2. how are book clubs usually run and/or established. i've never been in one. for example, do members take turns picking books? are there established parameters e.g., only history books that apply to selections.
i know mom's in a couple of book clubs - perhaps she can offer us some guidance.
Does anyone have a particular night we could discuss the book?
Have you already finished reading it?
Eeek! I haven't even gotten the book yet!!!
Do we want to do it before Christmas or after? I will probably order the book on tape and listen to it as I am driving to GA so I will be able to have it done mid-December.
Okay, I take that back. I just bought the paper book rather than the audio book so it will take me longer to get it read. The second week in Jan might be a good time to have it read by.
Has anyone started reading it yet? I haven't picked up my book from the library yet.
No not yet I vote for Mid Jan
I signed up to get a copy of this book from my local library and there are 8 other people in front of me, so it might be a while before I get a chance to read it. I will keep checking to see if its added to netlibrary.com collection. I will let you know if it shows up there, then you can all just download it and listen to it when you have time.
Did we set a date yet?
I have read the book. I also saw Dad and Lana read it. Do we have a date yet?
Oops! I haven't read it yet. I need to get a copy and get going on that!
Mom has a copy I am sure she would let your barrow it.
