I am traveling again this week. This time near Rochester NY. I went out to dinner at the Bonefish Grill which I had never eaten at before. In an attempt to be healthy and adventurous I ordered Tuna. My server told me it was excellent rare. I had heard this was good so I decided to try it but compromised for medium-rare. It came out 2 inches thick with a 1/4 inch on each side cooked. If you have ever seen the Lord of the Rings Triology there is a part where Gollum catches and eats a raw fish. It was a disgusting scene. As I tried to eat the rare (i.e. Raw) fish I thought of him. For the first time in many years I sent something back to the kitchen for additional cooking.
Adventurous Indeed!

David really loves rare fish-sushi, tuna, etc. I like things cooked myself. By the way, I love Lord of the Rings-my favorite part is about David. The wizard is told that he is late. The wizard replies that he is never late..but arrives exactly on time. David arrives on his time.
On no Dan try it next time rare. Tuna is good raw but I like it best rare. 1/8 to 1/4 inch cooked on each side is the way I make it at home. I like Ahi Tuna so much that those who eat out with me often don't even need to ask me if it's on the menu that what I order. I first tasted it about 6 years ago on the beach in Hawaii and have not been able to get enough of it sense. I would be glad to cook some on the grill for you next time you are in spokane.
Dan,
I agree with Dave. There is nothing like rare tuna ... best eating I've ever tasted by far!
I have never tried rare grilled tuna but I do like tuna sushi. Joe Perry's wife, (Amcor SLC) taught me how to eat sushi and I found I like it. David has helped me eat it too--just be careful of the wasabi! Did you like it better after it was cooked more?
I think I would go with the prime rib, rare is always good there. I will eat a little fish, but I don't think I could do something that rare. If there is a sushi bar on the cruise, I will try some raw stuff there. Your a brave man, raw fish....
yum. you've stumbled upon my favorite food. Like Dave and Dad I like mine just seared on the outside. I'm a huge sushi fan and I've tried many different types of raw fish in my sushi e.g., eel, squid, salmon, tuna, mackrel. My favorite by a long shot is a good spicy tuna.
one thing i don't care for is sashimi ... that is REALLY raw fish.
between seared tuna and creamie dreamies, this blog is making my mouth water.
I think that I am with Dan on the Tuna. I think that the visual and texture of it might bother me ... but I do love sushi raw and cooked ... I think that the fish comes in small enough pieces that it doesn't gross me out.
Well you all can have the rare tuna. It was fabulous cooked and even a little pink. However, I will never try it again. It felt like I was chewing on rubber.
