Acadia: The Movies

They say a picture is worth a thousand words... and they also say, when you have no skill at photography, take a video. Ok, so they don't say that, but, well, who cares what they say anyway. Here's some video from our recent "half the sibs reunion". Please note, no animals (including bike riders) were harmed in the production of this video and you must click the play button twice (on each of the videos) to make them play. Hope you enjoy.

Act One: "The Sister Hunter"
My attempt at art school videography

Act Two: "The Porcubeaver"

Act Three: "The Ride"
Wow! Was this fun!

This was far and away one of the best trips of my life and will forever be a great memory. It was so much fun to reconnect with my sisters. Kristie is living in one of the most stunningly beautiful natural areas in our country and it was great fun to visit her and and enjoy the memory of her time there together. Along with biking, hiking (the great "near death hiking acident" video will be posted later), and exploring we played cards, chatted and ate great food (I had clam chowder every where we went). I've long believed that the best gift you can give is time and happy memories. I hope that someday soon the rest of the sibs (and our sibmates and the parental units) can get together for a similar adventure. Olympic National Park anyone? Love and miss you all!

Prologue: "The Beach" I asked a man from the UK to take a photo but forgot to change the settings. I'm always forgetting to do that... and although we don't move much, the waves are fun to watch. Very Short.

Bonus Material: "Cut. Cut. Cut. or Oops! I've got it on filming" Again. I keep forgetting to change the camera/video settings. There are a lot more where these came from, but i'll spare you. The sisters kept ribbing me about it all weekend. I have to have at least ONE flaw, right?

Ok... so no jokes about the camera skills folks. Or else I'll bring up that time when mom and dad where in Ireland and... well, you get the picture. tee hee.

Charlie, you are too funny! I loved the candid videos (and I loved that I could actually make them play,). I really loved the self-portraits--since the cameraman usually isn't in the picture. I really liked the porcupine but are you sure it wasn't a bear? And most importantly, I'm glad you love each other and could spend some fun time together

Debby and I laughed right out loud when we saw the Sister Hunter video. We had no idea that Charlie had been creating a whole movie when he came up behind us to scare us ... so it was pretty funny when we saw it. The bike riding videos were pretty fun to be in and see too. My favorite is the one where we look like we are in a video game.

It was definitely a porcupine. It is only the second time that I had seen a porcupine. The first time was with Grandpa Ward at the cabin. That time I thought it was a dog. Porcupines are pretty important on MDI. There are many islands of the coast of Mt. Desert Island but the most prominent in Bar Harbor/Frenchman's bay are the Porcupine Islands. There is a legend of a giant on the island. He had some pet porcupines and he warned them not to not to "stray from the mountaintop, one day while the giant was away the porcupines chased one another to the island's shore. When the giant returned and found the porcupines missing, he grew angry. He called out to the porcupines, but they ignored his calls. Furious, the giant began hurling boulders from the mountaintop. Terrified, the porcupines fled into the harbor to escape. As luck would have it, a wandering ferry happened upon the porcupines and turned them into stone, forever protecting them from the giant's wrath."

I remember Charlie always had alot of fun with a video camera. When mom and dad got a camera in Idaho Falls Charlie's video would be the most interesting to watch.

Looks like a really fun time.

Looks like you all had a good time. I thought there would be video of the free soda at the rest area.

Dave, that would have been a pretty sketchy and yet funny video.

The "SODA INCIDENT" as you know from the voice message) occurred at a Maine Turnpike Rest Area. Unlike western rest area's these have every service you'd ever get off the highway for... gas, food, bathrooms, etc. This particular rest area had one great big building which was set up like a mall-food-court. There was a burger king, a gift shop, a convenience store, and a pizza place. All the stores (and the bathrooms) were on the perimeter of the room with seating in the middle.

Up to this point on the entire trip I keep telling Deb, “Don’t take a sack at the store" (shopping bags are a huge part of our waste problem and cause a recycling nightmare.) and I also say, “reuse your soda cup" (a refill costs less and reduces waste). I know. Annoying. But it runs in the family.

So Deb and I walk into the rear of the building with our refill cups (which are really cute penguin cups by the way) and see a bank of soda fountains to the right. We start filling up and suddenly realize we’re the only ones with cups that don’t say “Burger King” on them… but what can we do, the cups are full. Dump them? That’s a waste. Try to pay for them? Burger king doesn’t do refills, and they don’t inventory the soda, they inventory the cups, the soda has no value in their inventory. But still. We feel like we’re shop lifting, (probably because, well, in a way we are). We look at each other, knowing full well what the other is thinking... we turn and calmly walk the five feet to the door... and then when we get outside we full on sprint to the car and burn rubber out of the parking lot like we’re Thelma and Louise or something. It was terrifying and hilarious all at the same time.

The funny thing is that if we’d been with the folks, Mom would have dumped the cup, and bought a new one from BK and Dad filled up the cup and walked out the door and never thought about it again. I guess Deb and I fit somewhere in the middle of Mom’s awareness and guilt and Dad’s ability see gray areas of life and move through them without thinking twice.

That is so funny. I am glad you don't take the bags and you get refills on the on the pop and I hope you never buy water bottles they are the biggest waste of all. I think everyone should sell refills. We will have to make sure we all bring refillable mugs and cups to the sibling reunion next year.

Charlie! You are such a hoot! I'm never going to forget how much fun this trip was. There were so many moments when I disovered myself by spending time with both of you. One thing I learned for sure. I am 42. I'm used to being the most hyperkentic person in my universe with co-workers,friends and sometimes children panting behind me, but when I hung out with these two I was always the last of the pack.

Maine is incredibly beautiful, as Charlie says, but equally beautiful is our very accomplished little sister who really knows her way around and, on at least one occasion, spoke like a real "Mainer" ... we haven't even mentioned her neighbor, Paul, who is an MDI relic of sorts with a thousand interesting stories to tell. I met him in the middle of a yoga pose when he snuck up behind me and tapped me on the arm. He thought I was Kristi and couldn't imagaine for the life of him what was the matter with her!
