Katie, Emma and Chas are playing a game together and when I asked what it was called, they shrugged and said"pretend games". We decided that we wouldn't be watching TV on school nights and so they are entertaining themselves, go figure! I love to listen to little kids pretending. They each put in their ideas and combine them into a grand adventure! I can sure hear a lot of different and diverse words coming out of the family room; Tsunami, fire, poison ivy, T-Rex, sandstorm, team, war, fight, shield. It is funny how the themes of these games have changed since Chas has been old enough to contribute instead of just follow along.
My favorite kid phrase is "and pretend......". I am pretty happy that even though they are growing and changing, they will still play together for hours and hours.
So my question to the 6 Screaming pigs is; Did you all play pretend when you were little kids? (I'm sure Danny can't remember!) I played Indians a lot with my brothers and cousins in the lava rocks at my Grandpa's but I think that ended when my brother shot me in the foot with a BB gun.

I don't really remember playing pretend. Except for the time that Cathy Brower and I made "Rollo's" out of mud and tried to give them to Danny & Doug Brower. I remember playing in the mud/dirt a lot. We had a swimming pool that we were always digging the the back yard (the biggest it ever got was about 3 feet deep). We had a dirt bike trail across the street that the big kids built but I helped out every once in a while. We had a lava rocks to explore. And we played A LOT of night games with the neighbors.
I remember that we tried to dig two swimming pools. The one behind the block fence also doubled as a foxhole. The thing I remember the most is playing in the mud accross the street when the snow melted in the spring. I would build dams and divert the water for hours at a time. I remember playing at the canal some too. The thing that seems odd to me know is that we went anywhere we wanted without adults. We wandered all over that neighborhood. With the world the way it is now our kids just can't do that.
I think most of the games we played were made up. We had the tiny town game that you spent 2 hours setting up and dividing the town. It was more fun getting ready then playing. Some things like kick the can had rules but they changed every time. I can remember some games like monopoly and of course we were the first of any one I knew to get a computer game. Long live Pong! It was short lived though we went a long time with no TV. All and all we were better making up our own games.
I use to play with friends for hours with little sticks (that were cars and trucks) twigs with leaves (trees) and big rocks (houses). We'd build tunnels, lakes and streams. Pretend? I don't know; our little towns were pretty real in our young minds. A few years later we moved from building towns to the foothills where we built tree house and forts. What a great time we had. I yean to be back to those days as I tell the story. What fun we had!!
Dad ... it sounds like you and Mom are going back to those days ... with a tree house up in the Ogden Valley! I think that as well get older we learn more sophisticated ways to make our dreams become reality.
