Joshua was able to call us on Saturday and we talked with him for about an hour.
He is doing well - he sounds a little bit homesick and a stressed out, but tells me that the Corps has prepared him well for the task at hand and he is paying attention and trying to stay safe. He is in the North, in a rural area but expects to be transferred to a city soon. His activities are routine.
He describes his daily activities with a sense of boredom - same old. same old. but did emit a spark when he talked about finding and reading a book about vikings. He is very interested in his heritage as a viking and sent me on a hunt to find historical fiction that could teach him more about the warriors from his genetic past (he'd like to learn more about Cherokees too). He then made it very clear that he is not interested in "fluff' - all novels arriving in Iraq should have an element of reliable history in them :-) ..... I like Josh.
He is getting letters from Motomail (as of Saturday he had only gotten my first one, but it tells me we've got the address right!) and he appreciates them more than I can tell you. He will not always be able to send letters back to all of us, but I promise to keep you updated here.
Thank you all for loving Joshua and helping us to take care of him while he is in Iraq.
Love,
Joshua's mom

Thanks very much for the update! I'm disappointed however that he hasn't received our motormail yet. Hope we sent it correctly? Good to hear he has interest in his heritage ... I love to read about mine and mom is a Dane through and through. I'm going to send him, through motormail, the piece I posted on the Blog about the Ward family moving west. I'm sure he will enjoy it.
Josh's Grandpa
Glad you got to talk to him and to hear that he is safe. I know it can be frustrating having limited contact.
We used the same settings in our motomail that you suggested so I'm confident it will go through.
By the way who pays for motomail? It was free for me to send so I'm sure the tab is being picked up somewhere.
Thanks for letting us know about Josh--we do love him and are concerned about his well-being. We didn't get a motomail done this weekend but we'll do it tomorrow. Love to all of you on the east coast.
I think the government probably has a contract with someone to fund motomail - i'm not sure. i only know the USMC tells us to use it so it's safe.
I think he's getting your motomails, just when i talked to him he had only gotten the first one i sent .. by now i'm sure they are coming right along.
thank you for writing to him :-) i know it means a lot to him.
