Harris Cousins

"The Cousins" have come and gone for another year. The weather was pretty good--cloudy and coolish but the rain held off until yesterday. Ted Martinez, Sharon and I were voted into the cousinship as full cousins this year! Sharon and I got in easlily but Ted had to do a lot of campaigning with Kathy as his sponsor. We played Mexican Train--aptly won by the Martinezes [Debbie's words not mine], went to a movie, laughed 'til we were sick and ate a lot. The highlight of the weekend for me was a trip to the Mesa Temple with Sharon, Debbie, Mary and Kathy. It was wonderful being in the Temple with them, especially pondering on "Families Can Be Forever." I'm sure Grandpa and Grandma Will and Zina are happy to know some of their descendents were in the Temple together. There are lots of things that bring a family closer together but the Temple is one of the best ways. Years ago I never thought it would be possible to be in the Temple with these Harris Cousins so it was really special to me. Because of the good, calm and peaceful atmospher of the Temple I enjoyed this Cousin event better than any we've had. The golf tournament was won by Chuck. (finally!) We put in a call to Aunt Evie to let her know the good news--she's always pulling for him.

Mom was a real trouper the whole week. She didn't feel she could play golf (hurt knees)so she and Dixie (hurt back) rode on an extra cart following the other girls and cheering them on all the way around the course. She cooked a wonderful fish stew the first night and then hosted the awards dinner Saturday night, with lots of help from Kathy, Mary, Sharon, Debbie, Chuck (he cooked the steaks) and Dixie; which everyone loved!

By the way the only reason Chuck won is because he played better than everyone else (that's not like him based on his past performance). I finished in 4th place because uncharacteristically I couldn't putt!

We missed not having Phil and Freda but they are committed to be back again next year.

Finally, Mom, Sharon and Ted are now “True” cousins and by becoming so they stand on the same shaky ground as the rest of us. Welcome, welcome cousins LaRee, Sharon and Ted!
