Clay and I saw Alton Brown make this on "Good Eats" so we decided to give it a try (I belong to Grandma Ward - always trying a new recipe), but following the recipe exactly would be no fun (I also belong to Grandma Larsen), so here is the link to Mr. Brown's way http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/indian-rice-pudding-recipe/index.html ...
Clay and I did not like the idea of raisins or pistachios, so we left them out. We did like the idea of ooey gooey, so we used 1/2 Arborio rice and 1/2 long grain. We did not have cardamom, so we sprinkled a little Cinnamon and nutmeg on the top of the mix in the middle of cooking (ok, it was a total afterthought, but when we cook around here it's a journey). And last but not least on the Good Eats episode (Puddin' Head Blues) where he made the rice pudding, he cooked the tapioca in the crock pot, so Clay and I said, "why not do the same with the rice pudding" ..... so we multiplied the ingredients (or rather the ones we chose to use) by 10, stirred it all up and turned the crock pot on high ... I'd say it took about 2 1/2 hours, but once it was thick and creamy goodness we turned the crock pot to "warm" for a good 2 hours. Everyone loved it ... but please don't multiply by 10. I have some seriously large sons around here and we did not even finish half of it; everyone agreed it was better warm....OH and WAIT ... check out the pudding dishes Jon found for me, aren't they the cutest thing ever!
Yeah rice pudding
PS. Jayson made the ebbles this year ... now he really is a grown-up!
Enjoy.

Looks good I will have to give it a try. Jayson has long been a Ebble maker. He did better than me and the tomato
You meant at the Tomaot Reunion and you're right!
Love the post and I can't wait to try the pudding ... at least with your receipt I'll get some next year!! I've never had the almond and probably never will. Maybe if mom and I do Christmas alone someday and she doesn't get any pudding I'll get the almond.
Probably not because I'll be to old to realize I have it and say something like, "when did we start putting nuts in the pudding?"
LOL .. I forgot that Jayson had made ebbles before, but so did he ... he was fumbling around the kitchen trying to figure out how to do it (or maybe he was just trying to remind Jon that it is Jon's job to make the ebbles) ... either way he made 'em this year and did a fine job. Eliott made his famous french toast and I made the bacon, "Grandma Great's Eggs" complete with paprika and the juice.
we love christmas breakfast.
hang in there dad, your day is coming.
I always thought rice pudding was supposed to be served hot.
Kristi told me that I was wrong about that this year.
I've always served rice pudding cold because I like whipped cream on it but a lot of people like it hot. Maybe next year we'll try it hot. Kristi?
I love rice pudding hot or cold. Lots of the family stirs around in their pudding to see if the have the almond and when they find they don't they stop eating, if they ate anything in the first place. This year it didn't take me anytime at all to find out I didn't have the almond. Next year mom and Kristi will make a whole pot full so poor old dad won't be left out!
Poor Dad--if I wasn't snowed in I would go to the store and get the ingredients for rice pudding. Who knew he liked it so much? Cute dishes Jon--you did good on the present!
